All limited company directors must provide Companies House with a service address at the time of incorporation. This information is placed on the public register along with their name and company details, and directors will receive correspondence at their service address regarding the company they run. Should you wish to change a director’s service address at any time after company formation, you should inform Companies House of any such changes within 14 days of doing so, in one of the following three ways.
- Using the online Admin Portal of a formation agent.
- Online using Companies House WebFiling service.
- By post to Companies House.
Choosing a service address
Unlike a company’s registered office address, a service address can be located absolutely anywhere in the world. This means there is no need for a company director to reside in the same country in which the company is registered. Provided the registered office remains in the correct country, a director can run a company from wherever he pleases. A director can also choose to use the registered office as his service address or he may use his home address, however, most people prefer to use an address that is not their place of residence, thus ensuring the privacy of their home.
The most common choice for many directors is to use a service address facility provided by another company. This type of service is widely available and usually very affordable. Any correspondence received at the service address will then be forwarded on to an address of the director’s choosing, be that in the UK or overseas.
